Cooking Companions 🙂 – Unravel the mystery in this cute psychological horror VN, set deep in the woods of the Tatras Mountains. Will you wind up on the chopping block? Everyone compares this game to Doki Doki Literature Club, but I don’t think Doki Doki’s got anything on this. This has been one of the darkest visual novels I’ve played in a long time. I recommend playing blind instead of watching a playthrough with this one. And while it may seem short at first, you’ll soon realize it’s like an onion! It has so many freaking layers! Even the adorable comic relief characters have a sickening backstory. But one thing to know before getting this game– this isn’t so much a jumpscare type of scary game, but rather a lingering creepy feel at every point after things start to go south. It hardly has anything I’d call gore either, but some of the sprites genuinely made me, a grown adult, not want to turn the lights off to my own room at night.

A Renpy horror game which has the cutesy charm of a group of mascots, and a family in a cabin seeking shelter. While the game starts off as a sweet narrative game where we see everyone trying to survive the cold elements and starvation quickly twist into a horror nightmare. The game really has an interesting cast of characters with some funny moments, as haunting escalates in the corners of scenes. Ghostly apparitions taunt the player while the craving of food becomes dominating. The basement holds the secrets to the hut and stores the meat you need to survive. While the game has the base story as you unlock endings there are more modes to play through the game once unlocked. Telling of further story or giving more horror moments to enjoy. The game really has a lot of creepy imagery and does use some jump scares. This works really well when against the cutesy mascots and heart warming feel of the cabin.
