Every retro-inspired FPS I have enjoyed playing so far had this *one* thing that set it apart in my view. Maybe it was exceptionally pretty. Maybe it had braniac-level strategic combat chess. Maybe the level design was over the top intricate and borderline engine-breaking. Sometimes it’s even an extremely endearing story or clever ways of story-telling. You always find something. Herald of Havoc has… none of these things. It looks alright, sure. The combat has the strategic depth of… well… 1993’s Doom? The maps are functional and not confusing. The story is… umm.. There-ish? “But melancholygeek” you utter, shaking your head in bemusement, “didn’t you just say, the game would be ‘well worth or while’? That sounds pretty mediocre.” And, sure, mediocre Herald of Havoc could be, wouldn’t it have this one very special thing that sets it apart from many of its contenders: Pure, unadulterated, balls-to-the-wall, in your face gameplay fun. Everything I mentioned above, combined with a weapon arsenal that cheeky me neglected to comment on before, fits together to a game that is simply immensely fun to play. It’s fast, it’s brutal, the weapons are a joy to fire. You never knew you needed a Rotary Shotgun in your life until you fired this beauty of a beast. And don’t get me started on the secondary of the chaingun. Who needs a grenade launcher when you can have a “bunch-of-grenades tosser”.
