It’s quite different to the previous two games, changing up the more cinematic approach to something more akin to a formulaic Ubisoft type of game. The basic premise of the story is that Vietnam veteran Lincoln Clay is out to avenge his the death of his adopted family after being betrayed by the mafia, and does so by dismantling the criminal empire across the fictional city of New Bordeaux. It factors into the core gameplay, where you’ll go district by district meeting allies, taking over various businesses, and killing bosses until you run the whole city. It’s fun at first, but seeing as how the entire game is constructed around this process, it becomes very repetitive and dull. It’ll throw you a good action setpiece now and again though, and these are probably the best moments of the game, as well as feeling more in line with the first and second games. The combat is pretty great, with a wide range of tools to help you approach a situation, and the stealth elements are particularly well designed, so combined with solid level design the core gameplay is one of the game’s strongest aspects. The same can’t be said of the driving, and it sadly seems to have been a second thought in development considering the only vehicles you get to use are cars and a boat. Due to the nature of the game’s structure, the plot ends up being pretty repetitive too, as you just roam around doing stuff until you can take down a boss, and as enjoyable as those sequences are, some of them are pretty much just lifted from the previous games.
