The greatest thing I can say about Wanderlust is that it really does make you feel like you’re traveling. The game of course has a real sense of adventure to it and the way the stories are told makes it feel like you’re there. There’s a good balance between chunks of story and little one or two sentence observations. The stories told have a journalistic feeling to them, and this really helps with that. The stories are nicely varied. In one you’ll be yachting off to the Antarctic circle, another sees you traveling across Europe for love and of course you have the “Essential Gap Year in Thailand”. The variety helps keeps things interesting between stories, and you get a varied perspective on traveling. Some of the experiences in the game are told impressively well. For example, there’s a passage in one of the stories about diving, and the character tries to explain what being in the water feels like. I’ve never been diving before, but the way it was described gave me a real sense of what it’s like. You’re given a decent amount of choice when it comes to how stories play out. Every chunk of the stories told usually has at least a couple of dialog or action choices for you to make, and the game is very responsive to what you choose. It helps make it feel like you have some say in what’s going on, which helps keep it engaging.
