Dead Island 2 was an upcoming action role-playing game developed by Dambuster Studios and published by Deep Silver. The game was initially announced during E3 2014 and was intended as a sequel to the original Dead Island, which was released in 2011.

Dead Island 2 was expected to continue the open-world zombie survival gameplay of its predecessor, set in a fictional location in California. Players would have been able to explore the vast open world, scavenge for resources, and fight hordes of zombies using various weapons and abilities. The game was meant to have both single-player and multiplayer modes, allowing players to team up and face the zombie apocalypse together. However, the development of Dead Island 2 faced numerous delays and complications, resulting in the game being in development hell for several years. There were changes in development studios and creative directions, which further added to the challenges of bringing the game to completion.

However, in July 2015, Deep Silver announced that they had parted ways with Yager due to creative differences. Afterward, the development of the game was handed over to Sumo Digital. Reboot and Reveal: In 2019, after the change of development studios, Dead Island 2 seemed to have undergone a partial reboot. Deep Silver unveiled a new trailer and gameplay footage at E3 2019, indicating that the game was still in active development. The new trailer showcased the sunny California setting overrun by zombies and highlighted some of the game’s features, such as cooperative multiplayer and diverse combat options.
