Super Meat Boy is back! This time around Meat Boy is always running, literally it’s an auto-runner. You will jump, dive, slide and punch your way through brutal levels and mean boss fights. Meat Boy and Bandage Girl have been living a happy life free of Dr. Fetus for several years and they now have a wonderful little baby named Nugget. Nugget is joy personified and she is everything to Meat Boy and Bandage Girl. One day while our heroes were on a picnic, Dr. Fetus snuck up on them, beat Meat Boy and Bandage Girl unconscious with a shovel and kidnapped Nugget! When our heroes came to and found that Nugget was missing, they knew who to go after. They cracked their knuckles and decided to never stop until they got Nugget back and taught Dr. Fetus a very important lesson. A lesson that can only be taught with punches and kicks.

Once again I find myself wishing for a neutral rating. The OG Super Meat Boy was one of my favorite games for a long while and I was legitimately excited when I heard there was going to be a sequel. While it’s fun enough in it’s own right, the auto-running aspect takes a lot of getting used to and I feel like it detracts from the game as a whole. Super Meat Boy was all about finbding creative ways to get through levels fast, but something is lost when the levels are all randomly generated. There are still interesting shortcuts to take, but executing them doesn’t feel as satisfying here. I appreciated the cutscenes and hidden content paying homage to classic games and most of the mechanics are interesting. However, the game has a tendency to eat inputs now and again and the one button jump-dash mostly got me killed when I would try to wall jump a frame too early and punch instead. There are things I like about SMBF, but like many others, I’m mostly disappointed it’s fallen short of the mark I came into the game knowing it was an auto runner. I tried to give it a chance. It just does not feel like a fun platforming game. The music is good, not as good as the original. The platforming feels at times clunky and you lose the aspect of “Well that was obviously my fault” when you make a mistake. If you’re looking for a tight, difficult and fun platforming game, this is not it. If you’re looking for an auto runner game, go play the Mario Autorunner, that was at least somewhat enjoyable.
