More Content than Ever If you’re a Rune Factory 4 fanatic, challenge yourself with a new difficulty mode, then relax and enjoy new in-game cutscenes and an updated opening sequence. Even though Rune Factory 5 is coming out literally tomorrow as of posting, this game is still something you should experience. Grabbed the original version for the 3DS on a whim at GameStop around 2016 looking for something to keep me busy on a flight and it did not disappoint. Sunk almost over 100 hours into that game, from all the amazing dialogue and Town Events that game had, as well as the story that, while definitely a cliched ‘power of friendship’ anime story, all the surrounding elements are written so well it all gelled together in a surprisingly strong fit. Unfortunately, since it is a somewhat obscure older game from the mid-2010’s, there are some flaws from that era: Eliza’s side quests, which are necessary to unlock more seeds, take an extremely long time to complete when going in blind. Easily 3-4 in game years if you don’t know which ones are coming up. Some stuff is just not told to you at all. The only way to get Sword and Shield Seeds is through a Dungeon Seed, which is only available to you by going to a specific spot in the perma-Fall area that only opens during the first 5 days of a season. No one tells you this and Harvesting Sword and Shield plants is an Eliza request, so you will pretty quickly be sent to Google on a blind playthrough.

Town Events are completely random. This is good for immersion and keeping different New Game+ runs different but it can mess with you if you’re trying to scout for specific ones. I remember the Event to activate the 3rd Arc is completely determined by RNG in the original, though I activated it within the first week of completing the second arc in Special so maybe it was changed? I have no clue. Grinding. The 3rd Arc is especially egregious since enemy Defense and HP scales really hard across the Rune Prana floors, and the Weapons/Armor to get you properly geared start requiring rare drops from normal enemies, bosses, fishing, and mining. It actually requires time to beat rather than speeding through like you can with the first two arcs, but the slog it puts you through is awful.I know I just listed a fair amount of negative aspects but these were mostly mild annoyances. I can’t stress enough that the Town Events and general story are the strongest parts of this game and the writing team should be commended for their work. Anyways, here’s to Rune Factory 5. This game’s still worth playing, especially since it’s cheaper, so if you’re not put off by older games this one is a keeper.
