Having just completed Tomb Raider (2013), I was excited to have the opportunity to play Rise of the Tomb Raider (RoTR) and spend additional time with Lara Croft. The second game did not disappoint me and I enjoyed it even more than the original. I played the base game plus two extra segments/DLCs (Baba Yaga, Blood Ties) which added to the overall experience and the back-story of the Croft family. For the most part, game mechanics are the same between games and I was able to jump into RoTR without any learning curve. I played on ‘Adventurer’ level (easiest of easy) to reduce the difficulty of combat. This is not the strongest aspect of my personal gaming and I wanted to focus more on narrative and exploration and spend less time dying. The easiest level also removes the requirement that you use crafting to heal. It does not simplify the platforming but my skills increased using the grapple hook and climbing ax to go where no woman had gone before. Slower (and more fragile) enemies allowed me to use more stealth with the bow and less melee attacks (which are usually fatal for me). Until the final scenes, RoTR seemed to have less ‘ambush’ scenarios (where dozens of enemies approach you from all sides). It also felt like there was more time to explore locations and look for collectibles without the threat of combat.
