Though the interesting setting sadly gives way to predictable scares and dull protagonists, Resident Evil 7’s new gameplay design framework and presentation are fantastic, and rightfully laid the groundwork for subsequent games. And sure, it may be a visceral and frequently shooty horror game, but the gory action takes a backseat to decently challenging puzzles, built up with a wide toolbox in ever-changing circumstances that masterfully ramp pressure up and down to keep things permanently interesting. I wasn’t enamoured enough to bother playing any of the DLC.

So I’m just going to be contrarian here, and I DID actually for the most part enjoy the game. The first half of the game was incredible, the last 3 hours or so were terrible and ruined a lot of the lasting impression for me though. Many of the reviews are correct that the game does a spooky atmosphere well and the callback to RE1 is very well done and that this is a pretty successful new turn on the series. HOWEVER, the moment you beat the third boss the game absolutely crumbles into pieces. The game’s combat is not satisfying or deep enough to be as fun as RE4, and the developers clearly did not realize this.
