This is based on the findings of climate scientists who have determined that 350 ppm is the upper safe limit for CO2 in the atmosphere to avoid the worst impacts of climate change. The Plan B: Terraform proposal suggests that increasing the amount of carbon stored in soils and vegetation could remove up to 50 gigatons of CO2 from the atmosphere per year. This is a significant amount, considering that current global emissions of CO2 from human activities are estimated to be around 40 gigatons per year.
