A twin stick shooter without the twin stick, Gunlocked is a sci-fi action roguelike about careful positioning and upgrade selection. Manage unique targeting systems across multiple weapons and upgrades, as you battle legions of alien ships, and then do it all over again! That sure sounds bad, but wait ‘gunlock’ doesn’t work on some bosses and just does nothing instead! And good luck figuring out when a boss can be hit and by what because I couldn’t. What was going on on screen vs the bosses health bar were two totally different things. It makes no sense and seems like no one has played this game. And remember THE TITULAR WEAPON OF THE GAME DOESN’T WORK ON BOSSES. K? Also, just game design wise the game is boring, progression as you upgrade your ship during a run is linear, not exponential, meaning you never ‘unlock’ or go ‘go super saiyan’ like you do in other Vampire Survivor-likes. You just get slightly stronger as the game slowly scrolls by in front of you. Your guns never get crazy or do anything interesting, they all suck and then stay bad through-out a run. Also, when you get hit and take damage there is no ‘feel’ to it. Your sprite just passes over the enemy or asteroid and you take damage, you have to be paying really close attention to even realize you got hit. But even that is difficult because the background colors in the game tend to become the same as enemy colors, so you can’t even really make out what you need to in the game. This is a boring game. This is a poorly designed game. This is a bad game.

Manage unique targeting systems across multiple weapons and upgrades, as you battle legions of alien ships, and hope you’re strong enough to defeat the mothership! Then do it all over again with a new strategy. You only control movement, but every weapon has its own unique targeting system that you can influence. I’d say this game was made with a lot of love but I honestly can’t say that. Did anyone play this game? Did anyone have fun while they played the game? It’s honestly hard to imagine. Allow me to explain. First think of a shump, then think of the weapon you want most, something that shoots fast and straight ahead. That is not in this game. Every weapon is a gimmick. Not a terrible conceit but the execution is horrific. Let’s start with the titular weapon of the game: the ‘gunlock’. It’s on a lengthy cooldown, does a little radar effect to target enemies and then shoots a slow but high damage projectile at them. Doesn’t sound too bad. Right? Wrong. Because the game is a scroller, like a lot of shumps. This weapon is no joke so slow, that when fully upgraded, it cannot target and shoot enemies fast enough before they get from the top to the bottom of the screen. The gun doesn’t do anything to quick enemies, let that sink in. You only get four weapons at a time in this game and honestly the gunlock weapon seems to be amongst the better weapons. Youch.
