Gomez is a 2D creature living in a 2D world. Or is he? When the existence of a mysterious 3rd dimension is revealed to him, Gomez is sent out on a journey that will take him to the very end of time and space. Use your ability to navigate 3D structures from 4 distinct classic 2D perspectives. By the time I ‘beat’ Fez, I realised I was playing two games. The first is a puzzle-platformer that uses 2D planes in a 3D world in a fun and challenging way to force you to think about more than what you’re just seeing. The second is an esoteric, often-times seemingly cryptic puzzle game that requires some thought removed from the game itself to solve. Of these two games, I like the first, but dislike the second. By-and-large, you can see the credits roll without needing to engage too much with the second. The problem I found, however, was that as you were playing through the first game it started giving way to the second. By the time I was almost at the credits, I was finding it more and more difficult to find the part of the game I enjoyed. So why the recommendation? What this first part offers is a rhythm where you can really build up a momentum to moving around and finding this or that, or giving you the time and space to work out what’s being asked of you and to mess around until you get the reward. With an inviting aesthetic and a suitable soundtrack, this is Fez at its best. Sure, some of the asks do get more challenging, but they’re often met with the satisfaction of realising what you should be doing, or that moment of idiocy you feel when you realise the simplicity of the solution compared to your muddling through. All these aspects that make a puzzle enjoyable

First Time playing this game was back in 2013. I was a nine year old boy with an Xbox 360 and a fathers credit card. I loved Minecraft and bought any game that looked like it in any similar way. Fez fortunately caught my eye and unlike any other game I bought, this game made me feel funny. I remember waking up on Saturday mornings with the sun not risen yet, bluish hue from the outside bled through my living room blinds, Turning my Xbox on to immediately play Fez. This game was an escape from reality. Fez breaks the rules of platformers and reinvents them in its own unique and interesting way. The gameplay is smooth and polished,The somber nostalgic-esque music compliments the stunning visuals, the puzzles are fun and creative, and the amount of dopamine you get from collecting a cube is unmatched. I highly reccomend this game to people who love a slow and calming gaming experience. These issues can be put to the side, as frustrating as they are, with how enjoyable the puzzles are, but as you start having to skip rooms because you have no clue what you’re supposed to be doing, or have to come back later when you work out what the game is telling you to do in its own language it wants you to decipher, as well as getting lost or going in loops, the early enjoyment begins to recede. If I played much longer, I think I would’ve turned on the game and started to dislike it. Overall, there’s some brilliant puzzles in here that are genuinely satisfying to solve and moving around a world that has a greater scale than what you can initially see is fantastic, but the longer it went on the more my enjoyment waned. At a certain point I had my fill, not being encouraged to do the rest of what the game was, I believe, unfairly asking of me.

Explore a serene and beautiful open-ended world full of secrets, puzzles and hidden treasures. Unearth the mysteries of the past and discover the truth about reality and perception. Change your perspective and look at the world in a different way. You get hints even fairly on though that this second game is going to take over sooner or later. Even before then, maybe you find the playable Gomez a bit sluggish in movement, a bit uncertain of your jumping from platform to platform. I got used to it, but I do wish it was a little faster and confident. You also have to reckon with general map traversal which I never found easy, almost as if I was fighting the map as much as I was the puzzles. Doors lead you all over the place, some jumping from one area to a distant other, but the lack of any sort of minimap, despite a smart preview of where a door leads if you’ve already been in, makes the greater scale of the world unnecessarily frustrating to navigate. The large pause-menu map works, but it can be clunky and breaks the pacing.
