Elderborn Free Download (v1.09)

Metal Action Fantasy Slasher with brütal FPP melee combat and souls-like/RPG character progression. In the times of legend, the barbarian tribes need a new dark messiah. The player becomes a merciless slayer who will uncover ancient secrets in the city of doom, and forge their own destiny. This ambitious indie game, five years in the making, combines old-school single-player feel, a classic heroic story, and modern level of skill-based challenge. All this and more creates an action-packed, lore-filled, engaging adventure that will last 8-10 hours in a single play-through. Prepare for: Skill-based, souls-like melee combat in first person perspective, complete with 11 varied weapons to master Character progression and skill system that allows you to play the game in your very own way A hand-crafted, mysterious, and dangerous world to explore – catacombs, ancient, monolithic city, and more A large selection of enemies, each with their own fighting style, tricks, strengths, and weaknesses An epic and somewhat exotic original heavy metal soundtrack with an occasional electronic beat An unapologetic tribute to Robert E. Howard-esque heroic fantasy and the awesome pop-culture of the 80’s and 90’s On the positive side game is quite fun for a brief amount of time it lasts. Combat is quite responsive and fast paced. Performance is also decent outside few areas in a second chapter there FPS just tanks down for no appearant reason. All in all , it’s not a BAD bad game , it’s just hardly as good as a lot of people will make you believe. If you can get it for ~5$ it’s a decent fun for couple of hours but it’s mediocracy sadly shines through every single gap

Now, dont get me wrong, i’m not trying to say that ELDERBORN is just a bad game , but frankly it is way more blown out of proportion by some people and reviewers than it actually is then you play it yourself. One can admit that whole DOOM reboot meets Dark Souls is a very compelling and ‘sellable’ premise on paper but both have a very shallow impact on the end product. Dark souls are solely represented by it’s weakest aspects like ‘UH IT’S HARD’ and ‘UH LET’S MAKE ALL ENEMIES RESPAWN AFTER YOU DIE AND MAKE SOME VARIANT OF BONFIRE’ , both of which aren’t what made Soulsborne games so good anyway. DOOM is represented mostly by attempt to imitate Mick Gordon’s soundtrack and fast paced, brutal combat which again is not bad , but in the end feels like just a marketing tick box rather than a true inspiration. It’s also important to mention that game is really short ( 3 hours short actually ) and has next to none replay value outside just bumping up the difficulty which , at least for me , again , is not what made Soulborne series to replayable. There’s also distinct lack of … anything really. Even in those 3 hours you pretty much fight same few types of enemies with few same weapons ( yes there actually are plenty of weapons in this game but they can be easily sorted into few categories and each weapon in same category is pretty much just a reskin of one another ) and last level , minor spoiler alert, is just series of arenas there you are swarmed by the same enemies you have been fighting last 3 hours. Super dull and uninspiring. And yeah, this game has most blatant Ornstein and Smough copycats i have ever seen

Metal AF,” as in, one short instrumental riff over and over for the entire first chapter. This lack of variety flows through the entire game. In the first chapter there’s 7 enemies. The skill tree is 9 skills in total; very lacking and the ones I took weren’t impactful. It takes an hour to see the first boss. The gameplay consists of walking around press mouse 1 on things and sometimes backing up or blocking. It’s immediately obvious that maxing speed imbalances at least the low difficulties. The first level drags on way too long and nothing really happens. The voice acting and story utterly fails at being attention-grabbing and wasn’t needed at all. The soulslike nature is just that it aims to be hard and your unused EXP drops when you die… that’s about it. I.e., it feels more like Minecraft on Hard than Dark Souls. It’s not a bad game, though. Its simplicity is a bit of a strength in that it doesn’t feel as tedious as some other singleplayer FPS games that require cycling knowledge of how different enemies interplay. It’s mindless but it still doesn’t entirely feel bad or draining. it’s way more pleasant than playing Turok in 2022. But I just don’t know why you’d want to play this over all the other “metal” singleplayer FPS games. Maybe if you’re really hungry for an extra 5 hours (apparently) of this style of game and have already played every other modern game like it. I think it knows its not a very good game. The splash screen when you exit is “leaving already?” I know you’ll be lonely when I leave, Elderborn, but I’ll just be joining the 85% of players who never played past the first chapter.
