Comparing the Greats That’s a lot to say because I loved Doom 2016 for its ability to revive the franchise and deliver the feel of the classic raucous and visceral experience while still bringing something entirely new to the table. It’s a game that made the Doom Guy into the Doom Slayer and didn’t even stop to let you ask why. Doom Eternal didn’t have to build that transition though. The developers could have just taken the template they established in 2016 and slapped more content on it and few would have complained. Yet, they chose to craft a game that demanded more interaction.

Rewarded skill and practice, and paid off by capturing the vicious excellence of the previous game while giving dedicated players the challenge they always wanted. Doom Eternal expands on the skills of the Doom Slayer by giving him tools like the flamethrower and the blood punch – while also adding weak points to the familiar set of enemies.

They also created level design with much more verticality and gave the Slayer a significant increase in maneuverability. These features let the player learn to use these tools skillfully to create a much richer gameplay experience. On top of that, the combination of an expanding base/hub that steadily unlocks with your success and an exploration of a still relatively small but interesting story made the game addictive almost immediately. Even with its overwhelming assault on the senses and significantly increased challenge, it was hard to put down.
