Micro-transactions were picking up steam. Gamers were sick and tired of forced multiplayer/co-op; allegedly to stop or delay trade-ins. Many developers were chasing CoD sales figures, with publishers routinely saying a game had ‘under-performed’ despite selling one million+ copies. People felt it was leading to a homogenisation of genres with survival horror, still considered somewhat niche back then, often taking the brunt of ‘modernisation’. So, with this maelstrom hanging over the gaming scene, DS3 was nearing completion and details about the game were regularly sending people into frothing-at-the-mouth rages. Everything was assumed to be implemented in the worst possible way. The main things were: 1: You can pay to get resources to upgrade with? IT’S PAY TO WIN! The core experience will be frustrating and unenjoyable unless you reach into your wallet! Screw EA.
